Through performance practice, somatic engagement, and an examination of primary artistic philosophies, this course introduces the principles, techniques, and rhetoric of the modern dance genre. Primarily an investigation of the rigorous physicality and mental processes required of embodying modern dance movement, this class also explores the foundational ideologies of the form through readings and video viewing. Discussion and written analysis of the history and development of the genre will thread through the physical practice.*

*In Fall 2024, this course will introduce students to Countertechnique®, a systematic approach for the 21st century dancer to experience moving with presence, ease, strength and courage to take risks. The ethos of this approach is practice, rather than performance; and requires a stamina of curiosity to implement internal directives while dancing. Alongside the study and practice of Countertechnique®, the course will explore contemporary applications of performance presence, task-based approaches to dancing, histories and lineages of concert dance - modern, post-modern, contemporary, and artists who are working in the field of contemporary dance performance today.
