XPL 199 enables students to engage in personal, professional, cultural and academically relevant experiences for academic credit.  Students engage in remote, immersive, reflective learning experiences with guidance and support from High Impact Practices (HIP) centers and departments such as the Archives, Center for Career Development, Center for Civic Engagement, Education Abroad, the Dean Rusk International Studies Program, the Van Every/Smith Galleries, Davidson Outdoors, the Hurt Hub, and the Sustainability Office.  Students in each section of XPL 199 participate in similar types of HIP experiences, individualized and tailored to their needs and interests. Students gather once every other week with the instructors, to reflect on their experiences with other members of the Davidson community, share critical learning moments, and seek peer guidance.

Davidson College’s Statement of Purpose is “to assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service.”

Global Citizenship is directly tied to that purpose.  It involves the knowledge of nations, cultures, or societies beyond your own.  Through high-impact practices, such as remote, international internships, volunteer opportunities, and independent study, we will explore global citizenship, and our relationships and interdependencies with social, political, and economic systems, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.

As a student in XPL 199C Global Citizenship, you will seek remote, internationally-focused opportunities with governments, nonprofits, or civil society organizations.

If a student is unable to commence an internship, volunteer or other experiential opportunity by September 22, then in consultation with me, s/he/they will select a regional or issue-related topic for independent study and research -- effectively, a simulated internship.
