In a time of hyper partisanship, talk of cancel culture and self-censorship and book bans and laws launched to prevent or curtail speech those in positions of power don’t like, this class is designed to help students cut through all of the bullshit. Students will challenge, and be challenged. Students will listen, and students will be heard. Students will learn the difference between productive dialogue, deliberation and debate, and the type of discourse that leaves everyone spinning their wheels. This class is designed to help students better understand where they currently stand in the mess and build skills that will help them get to a more productive space. It’s a journalistically-based course and will borrow heavily from that discipline, as well as the legal world.
