What is the “world” in world music? This course is a survey of sonic and musical practices by people around the world and how cultural groups understand these practices within their own systems of knowledge. This course begins by problematizing the concept of “world music” and the Euro-American concept on which it is based, after which it explores various registers, genres, instruments, theories, systems, and cosmologies built around what anthropologist John Blacking calls “humanly-organized sound” (1973).
