Primary Source Database: Social Explorer

  • Scope: Includes over 500,000 data indicators about population statistics in the US and in other countries. The topics can range from covid-19 cases, election voting patterns, crime data, etc. 

  • Features: You can search by country and then narrow it down by region or state to see data from a particular place. You can also search by color to see what kind of areas have a more of something than another if you are only focusing on something regarding high concentration fo something. 

  • Use Cases: If someone was writing a research paper about the change in voting patterns in the United States, they could use the Social Explorer to see how states having been voting in recent elections and use it to compare to previous election years. 

Secondary Source Database: PAIS Index

Scope: It is very similar to JSTOR in that it has several books, journals, magazines and other texts about many different topics. 

Features: You can sort it by publication year, language, subject, location, person, source type, and whether it was peer reviewed or not. You can also cite easily and get PDFs of the documents.

Use Cases: If a student needed to find sources for a research paper, this would be very useful to find specific sources. For instance, if a professor wanted a number of secondary sources and primary sources, this would be a good way to find them. It would also be very helpful if the student needed to find something published in a specific year.
