Explore a Database (Due 3/1)
One element of a successful research appointment is pointing out different databases and tips for navigating those databases. So familiarity with our databases and knowing how to use them are key skills for research consulting.
For this Research Challenge of the Week, do the following:
Choose both a secondary source (books, articles, etc) databases and a primary source database from the recommended list below:
Explore the database and post answers the following in this forum post:
Scope: What is the scope of the database (e.g. date range, types of sources, topic areas)?
Features: What specific search features does this database have (look at things like the advanced search, if it has a thesaurus, or look up any how-to documentation the database provides)
Use Cases: Based on your exploration, come up with some hypothetical use cases and example searches that you could imagine a student doing in this database.
During one of your shifts when you are working with another consultant, teach the main features of one of your databases to your fellow consultant.
Recommended Databases:
You can also choose a secondary source database or primary source database that isn’t on the list, just run it by me first.
