This course is a survey of the opera genre from the Western European music tradition. We will study some of the earliest operas from the Baroque period up through contemporary works in the 21st century. The composers and works studied are a very small portion of the overall scope of opera, and they are chosen to highlight some of the biggest trends and transitions within this very specific musical arena.

There are no prerequisites for this course. The ability to read music or have any prior background in music is not required.

This course satisfies the Distribution Requirement for Visual and Performing Arts and serves as an elective for the Music major and minor.
