If someone asked you “What is capitalism?” chances are you’ll have an instinctive, immediate response regardless of whether you have ever “studied” it. Chances also are that when you then start to express your response, you’ll find words and ideas escaping as you even as you reach for what seems just out of reach, but on the tip of your tongue. That feeling describes the reality of living in capitalism, under capitalist structures that are woven into the very fabric of our experience of life, our bodies and the basis of our thought. It is always harder to fully grasp or unpack the thing that is an overarching structure, that is most present and obvious to us.
