This course is an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Latinx Studies. Through a hemispheric approach, this course examines the historical and contemporary forces that have shaped U.S. Latinx culture, society, and politics. By analyzing the varied subjectivities of Latinx sub-groups, we explore the distinct intellectual project of Latinx Studies. We also analyze and situate political project of Latinx Studies. Central and guiding areas of inquiry include: colonialism; race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality; migration and transnationalism; identity; language; and social movements and power. This course will serve as a general introduction to the field of Latinx Studies to the more focused curriculum of upper-level courses.
