Medical anthropology examines the universal human experience of health, sickness, and healing. We discuss a wide range of topics such as cross-cultural attitudes toward health and illness, ethnomedicines, and ecological influences on disease manifestation. We take a critical approach in unpacking the underlying social structures such as political economy and social inequities that place a population or an individual at risk for diseases. The format during class time is mainly discussion of assigned readings supplemented with some lectures.
