This fall, our theme will be the depiction of foreign leaders in Latin literature. We will read texts about Hannibal, Vercingetorix, Cleopatra, and Boudicca, focusing on several issues across these works. What do these foreign leaders have in common and in what ways do they differ? What attitudes towards other nations and peoples are revealed in the depictions of their leaders? How do these authors use “otherness” to construct and respond to their own Roman leaders?
